As you are well aware, Pennsylvania continues to face a number of challenges with its health care delivery system. Last September Governor Corbett announced the Healthy Pennsylvania (Healthy PA) initiative to increase access to quality, affordable health care for all Pennsylvanians. The Healthy PA plan focuses on three core principles: increasing access; improving quality; and providing affordability.
One key component of the Healthy PA initiative is to expand telemedicine services throughout the state. In service of this objective, the Department of Health is pleased to participate in this roundtable, intended to bring together a diverse group of health care stakeholders, to include providers, payers, employers, government officials and consumers. The members of the roundtable will identify ways in which telehealth or telemedicine might be used to mitigate some of these challenges.
The end goal of the Roundtable will be the development of a three-year strategic action plan for facilitating the use of telehealth technologies to:
- improve care management for those suffering from chronic diseases, such as congestive heart failure, diabetes; asthma, COPD;
- increase access to emergent and acute care services; and
- increase access to behavioral health care.
I fully embrace this vision and hope you will join me as we move forward with telemedicine in Pennsylvania.
Secretary of Health, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
